Die Fledermaus is the most iconic operetta by Johann Strauss II, the “King of Waltzes.”Elegantly intoxicating waltzes and playful, lively polkas weave together a dazzling yet absurd ballroom spectacle. In the story, Baron Eisenstein, on the eve of his imprisonment, is persuaded by his friend Falke to attend a prince’s masquerade ball for one last night of indulgence. Yet this is no ordinary party, it is an elaborately orchestrated “Revenge of the Bat,” designed to repay a past humiliation when Falke was ridiculed and left a laughingstock. Amid swirling waltzes and laughter, everyone dons a mask: the husband masquerades as a marquis and flirts freely, the wife disguises herself as a noblewoman to test his fidelity, and the maid transforms into a high-society lady, mocking the elite. Lies and desires intertwine layer by layer, until all is revealed in prison at dawn, where, in the end, everything is blamed on a glass of champagne. This production is a collaboration between Taipei Philharmonic Opera Studio and Taitung Echo Orchestra. Blending concert performance with theatrical staging, it creates a rich audiovisual experience. With spoken dialogue in Chinese and Chinese subtitles for the arias, the story becomes clear and accessible, allowing audiences to fully enjoy the wit, music, and charm of thisclassic operetta. We warmly invite you to step into the enchanting world of operetta, put on your masquerade mask, and between music and champagne, discover the most authentic reflections of human nature.
