What does “puvarung” mean?
—Do what makes your heart happy, that’s puvarung.
Bulareyaung Dance Company’s tiaen tiamen Trilogy has arrived at the final chapter. In old age, may one become a puvarung.
The three episodes of tiaen tiamen Trilogy represent three stages of life in Paiwan: pulima, taking action with hands; puqulu, leading with wisdom, and puvarung, observing with the heart—letting the heart leads the way.
puvarung originally means “being mindful” in Paiwan. The elders no longer take actions nor speak up to make influence in the communities. Instead, they simply exist quietly and serenely, caring for and feeling the world with their heart. When the life journey comes to the end, the body still functions but languidly; the ears can still hear voices, but there’s no desires to respond. Everything returns to its origin. The end is the beginning.
Choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava invites Paiwan people to pace the traditional steps together on stage, in contrast with the solo dancer. The symbols and patterns of traditional Paiwan outfits will also be showcased to present the richness of life, contrasting the simplicity after the glamour fades.
Music director ABAO collects folksongs from different regions, inviting the Paiwan people to return to the arms of Mt. Dawu (Kavulungan, in Paiwan) and to sing with the same vitality of life, representing her hope of finding the harmony within differences. Artist reretan pavavaljung removes colors to return to black and white, creating a peaceful world in dreams beyond the hustle and bustle of the physical world.
“puvarung” is the ultimate ideal of life, resembling the babies with the purest soul. After experiencing life in groups, we return once again to solitude. tiaen tiamen Episode 3 will be a celebration of communities, and the last banquet leading to the origin of life.
* tiaen tiamen means “me and us” in Paiwan, an indigenous language in southeastern Taiwan.
