“ My Soulmate in the Study ” Yeh Tung-Jinn Solo Exhibition
“These small paintings are meant to be hung in a study, keeping you company as you read, work, listen to music, or simply sit in contemplation. If you allow yourself to look deeply into them, you may find yourself engaging in a dialogue with the work and sharing something with it. This is because the heart behind the creation of the work is also your own heart.” — Yeh Tung-Jinn
❃
The theme of this exhibition originates from Yeh Tung-Jinn’s own concept. It is not simply about the suitability of these small paintings for display in a study. Rather, it reflects his understanding of the relationship between artistic creation and the experience of viewing art. Once a work enters the space of a study, it is no longer merely an object on display. It becomes part of the viewer’s everyday life, accompanying moments of reading, solitude, reflection, and thought. In this way, the artwork becomes a presence that offers companionship to the inner self. The notion of a soulmate does not refer to a function imposed upon the artwork. Instead, it expresses Yeh Tung-Jinn’s understanding of how art can exist and resonate within our lives.
❃
This solo exhibition marks the first time in Yeh Tung-Jinn’s artistic career that small scale works have served as the primary format of his presentation. In contrast to the expansive presence of his larger works from the past, these new paintings are more restrained in size, yet their inner tension and energy remain fully intact. Through more concentrated compositions and lively, expressive brushwork, Yeh Tung-Jinn creates rich and powerful visual rhythms within the limited space of each canvas.
❃
The distinctive texture and layers of color characteristic of oil pastel are fully revealed through the repeated movement of the hand. Variations in the thickness and layering of the medium create subtle shifts in warmth and movement, allowing every stroke to carry a vivid sense of vitality. At the same time, these works demonstrate Yeh Tung-Jinn’s profound command of the oil pastel medium.
❃
For Yeh Tung-Jinn, brushwork is not merely a language of artistic expression. It also carries the emotions and lived experiences of the moment. He hopes that viewers will do more than simply look at the works. Through the sincere and powerful energy contained within each stroke, he invites viewers to encounter a force that reaches directly into the inner self. Ultimately, the artwork becomes a source of emotional support and inner strength, quietly accompanying each viewer in their own life.
