The imagery is drawn from personal photo albums and vintage books and magazines, arranged as casually as sticky notes on a wall. Though seemingly accidental, each piece condenses an independent story: a peeled apple, a leftover drink in a cup, a paperclip resting on the palm, or an abandoned old mattress by the roadside. These everyday trivialities collide with elements of classical masterpieces from art history, weaving together a tapestry of reflection, narrative, and surreal imagination.
Hovering between illusion and reality, they subtly conceal themselves within the fissures of space and objects. The leftover scraps and hollowed-out fragments remaining after cutting are far from useless waste; rather, they shine as luminous gaps of imagination. Clipped objects, art-historical remnants, and hollowed blanks intertwine to create an open narrative space.
Since 2018, oil pastels have become my primary artistic medium, whose inherent texture I embrace and embody. While painting, I rely on the pressure of my fingers to pull lines and smudge colors. Through repeated application, layering, and scraping, the surface exhibits a sculptural tactility akin to molding with fingertips. Multi-layered hues seep through the butter-rich impasto textures, guiding the viewer's gaze and fostering resonance among objects, space, and the observer.
This creative trajectory is deeply anchored in my daily life. Since relocating to Taipei, a thirty-minute scooter commute marks the beginning and end of each working day. Amidst the shifting streetscapes, my peripheral vision instinctively searches for discarded furniture and odds and ends left by the roadside. Once, I picked up an old dowry chest inscribed with the handwritten phrase "Taipei Box" in paint—four characters that cast a veil of anonymous yet mystical memory over an ordinary object, much like a clipped sheet of paper that leaves behind an imaginative void.
Looking back on my artistic journey and upbringing, those unpretentious, discarded, unfinished, and even obsolete images continue to replay and reconstruct before my eyes. This accumulation of time and life functions like pages of notes, remaining perpetually open within the work to continuously spark new narratives and dialogues.
